I have loved this song since I was five years old and listening to my first music albums on vinyl. I am drawn to musical theatre generally, in vocal lines that require your body in a certain kind of way and speak a sort of human urgency, vitality and depth of feeling. In the movie, 10 year old Mark Lester's plaintiff solo from the balcony is directed into a scene of highly choreographed chaos and dancing in the square below, but the pathos at the heart of it is what enters the soul I think, is what drew me to it as a lyrical landscape emotionally at home with the other works on the record. It has a sense of invitation to it, too, which made me like it for an 'opening track'.
